On a recent trip down to Melbourne, Phil spent a couple of days with Timmus at his place in the foothills of the Dandenong ranges.

One day, they took their digital audio recorders down to the local wetlands for an audio adventure, collecting sounds and experiences that they’ve woven together in this sonic postcard from Upper Ferntree Gully.

They started at the marshes, with birds and frogs heralding their arrival, but which soon went quiet.

They meander through the bush, discovering all sorts of sounds, and coming across a drone pilot practising for his license, the drone’s motor whirring an electric song.

Encountering the zing and thwack of the local archery range, finding archers firing arrows at wooden targets with their bows.

Pausing by the creek, little waterfalls trickling over rocks, they angle their microphones into the gully to record the water fumbling down the slope.

Walking up the path, the crunch of gravel underfoot, Timmus taking off into the distance, then returning with increasing velocity, ending with a skid right next to the microphone.

The tap of drumsticks on a metal sign, rhythmic hand claps and finger snaps in the reverb chamber created by a strange metal bin, its purpose unknown.

All these sounds and more, woven together to tell this little story, the only additions being a slowed down synth, tuning forks and a simple loping baseline.

To best enjoy, find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed for 10 minutes, whack some headphones on and take off on a sonic journey into the wilderness of Upper Ferntree Gully.
